Happy New Year! Gym dating?

by Mike Vifquain on December 31, 2009

Party like it’s 1999, err 2009!

The last few hours of 2009 are upon us and it’s a time to reflect on both the successes and mistakes of the past and focus on the goals for the new year.  2010 isn’t just a new year — it’s a new decade!  This is big!  The world seems to be crumbling around us with the war on terror, the economic crisis and an increasing amount of natural disasters.  Personally, I plan to make 2010 a time of self-change.  Not with wimpy resolutions that will never happen.  I’m talking about Life Changes.  Life changes aren’t easy, but they are not filled with fad diets and such drastic change that the goals are unrealistic.

When wishing everyone a Happy New Year I find myself saying “I wish you  Happiness, Health and Success in the New Year.”  Why these 3 specific things?  Well, to me these combined are the 3 most important things for a good life.  They are each open to interpretation though.

1) Happiness To myself and many others, happiness includes family, friends and loved ones.  To be loved and love in return one is generally pretty happy.  To see my children happy, healthy and enjoying their life brings me happiness.  To spend time with family and friends brings me joy.  This year I will focus more on increasing the time I share with my family and friends while making myself an overall happier person.

2) Health For some, health is being free of disease or sickness.  For others it’s living at a comfortable weight.  In one persons eye I can be seen as a very healthy guy.  I don’t usually get sick or have to go to the doctor and my blood pressure and cholesterol are under control.  Others might see me as an unhealthy slob with my weight being close to 300lbs and my BMI at 38 or so.  I look at myself as a healthy guy with an obesity problem.  The best part is my problem is it’s something I am able to fix.  I don’t have a disease that has to be treated with pills or hospital stays.  I have too much fat on my body that can be cured by making better eating decisions and more exercise.  I am a lucky guy!  As part of my “Happiness” goal mentioned above, I will improve my overall health and lifestyle by becoming more active, eating right and shedding the fat in the new year.

3) Success Business success. Life success.  No matter how you look at it, success involves having enough money to live comfortably in life.  Some want millions, while others want enough so they can live their same lifestyle through retirement.  I just want to live a happy, modest life without many wants or needs.  I don’t want to play “Keep up with the Jones’s” or “My car is nicer than yours.”  I want to be able to splurge and go on a yearly vacation with my kids and show them different parts of the world.  I want to have a roof over my head without any leaks and a car that works.  I don’t want to stress about paying bills or wonder where tomorrows dinner is coming from.  I want to be moderately stress free ,while staying active and teaching my children the values of life.  How will I get there?  Improving my Health will give me more energy and help to increase my productivity at work.  More productivity at work, means I have to spend less hours to accomplish required tasks and have more time to do bonus tasks.  More bonus tasks means an increase in my value to my employer which in turn should increase my income.  An increase in income will allow me to build up my savings quicker.

All three of these things can be improved by living a healthy lifestyle.  That’s where I am starting in 2010.  I will be healthier.  My life will be better because of it.  My kids lives will be better because of it.

To kick start things I rocked another hour in the gym burning 984 calories.  While there I noticed something that really bothered me.

Why do some women come to the gym with full make-up and hair done with these tiny little workout outfits?  You’ve seen them before, right?  They are constantly looking over their shoulder to see who is watching them.  Are they trying to pick up men?  Do they have really low self esteem and are searching for compliments?  I just don’t get it.  If you are in a gym with full make-up and you actually work out, your pores will clog and end up with acne-face.  That will in turn defeat the purpose of getting all dolled up in the first place.

Which leads me to my next question, are there gym romances?  Have you ever heard of anyone meeting in a gym and forming a relationship that works out?  It just seems to me that superficial will attract superficial and will ultimately end in disaster?  I can understand wanting to be with someone who shares and supports your healthy lifestyle, but in the case of these women who get all dolled up  how can it work?

Well, those are my thoughts for the day.

Cheers to you all and I hope you have a very safe and Happy New Year!  May it bring you plenty of Happiness, Health and Success!

My daughters surgery

by Mike Vifquain on December 23, 2009

So today was supposed to be a great day filled with wonderful updates, new pics, etc.

It’s not going to happen…

The day started off simple enough, take my daughter to her 9am dr appointment for a cast change on her arm and head to the gym.  A big NEGATIVE on that one.  When the cast came off, we saw this:

After 4 weeks in a cast, haileys arm didn't heel.

After 4 weeks in a cast, Haileys arm didn't heal.

The doctor ordered her to surgery immediately to re-set (read: re-break) her arm to ensure it heals correctly.  We arrive at the hospital around noon and don’t leave until after 9pm.  At least she didn’t have to stay overnight!  I’m happy to report she did very well and is feeling good.

I’ll consider today an “excused absence” from cardio.  I didn’t even get to eat today.  I was planning breakfast after my workout, which obviously didn’t happen.  I snacked on a few almonds throughout the day, and didn’t want to eat when I got home.  I was so nervous all day, it didn’t dawn on me to hit the cafeteria.

I will make it to the gym tomorrow, I have to burn as many calories as possible to counter-act my planned cheat day on Christmas!
